For years I struggled to learn affiliate marketing. I started over 10 years ago and began by building websites which I hoped would rank on Google’s free search engines. Back then, courses taught this strategy because it used to work well! Over time and with the millions more websites and affiliates attempting to rank their content, this strategy got progressively more difficult.

I ranked a few websites and made a couple of sales here and there though. But it was by no means a living and I had spent many hours watching videos and learning over a long span of time. I there in the towel many times but knew it was something worth pursuing.

One of the secrets to affiliate marketing is to stick at it until you have some results. Learn from your lack of results but continue learning and never stop. My strategies were flawed in the first instance. I was expecting an easy win. I suspect many people come into affiliate marketing expecting the same.

Over time I slowly realized the time and effort needed to make affiliate marketing work for me. I learned that, just because I wrote an article, it wasn’t necessarily going to be seen by millions of people! In fact, most of my articles were never even seen. I didn’t know how to promote them and get them seen. I just expected everyone to come, because, well, I was special and it was just going to work! How naive!

One of the ‘secrets’ of affiliate marketing is building an email list. I had the best results once I had a list of subscribers and promoted a product with paid advertising. This is probably the quickest way to see results in affiliate marketing. Content building takes time and there’s no guarantee your content will ever get a large enough audience to start selling anything.

Building an email list is vital for anyone who wants to build a real business from affiliate marketing. Without one, you’re relying on your website visitors buying from you after they land on your website. This only gives them a few minutes to make a buying decision. Get them on an email list and you can extend this period of time to months and even years ahead. Plus you can build a relationship with your subscribers by offering them value, insight and information which may be of use to them.

Paid advertising is another ‘secret’ of affiliate marketers. I avoided paid strategies for a long time because I didn’t have the confidence in the products I chose. I didn’t know how to run paid campaigns and I was afraid of losing money, because I didn’t have very much of it! So I stuck to ‘free’ marketing strategies like article writing and video creation. However, the results were very limited because of the strategy I used and the niche I was in.

It takes much longer to get traffic if you focus on only organic strategies. Paid traffic in instant, but again, takes time to learn and master.

The other ‘secret’ to using paid traffic is in choosing the right products to promote. This again was something I took a long time to understand. Having products which continue to pay out, even after your initial sale is a major key to making affiliate marketing work for you. I initially sold products which only paid me once. Plus I only made $40 or so on a sale of a $100 product.

I later learned that top affiliates choose bigger items to promote for better commissions and they choose memberships to sell so they can earn continuous commissions every month. A subscription product which pays you a small amount every month is worth far more than a single product which only pays you once. For each customer, you can earn a residual income, potentially for a lifetime. 100 customers becomes a real income because of the continuous commissions you receive each month of their membership.

Up-sells are another affiliate marketing ‘secret’ too. An up-sell, is basically a product which is sold to a customer after they have already bought from you. If you’ve even been to a fast food franchise you’ll know they always offer up an up-sell. “Do you want fries with that?” is an up-sell.”Would you like to supersize?” is an up-sell. By offering many products to existing customers you can earn far more than by only selling one product.

An existing customer is far more likely to purchase from you because they have already paid for something. Top affiliates know the power of the up-sell and benefit from more commissions made from each customer. Repeat custom is a major factor in most businesses so it should also factor in your affiliate marketing business too.

Here’s a final affiliate marketing secret. Most affiliates starting out will concentrate on getting someone to their website in order to turn them into a subscriber. They will spend a lot of time working on their website visitors number. But there’s two factors in turning a visitor into a subscriber. The number of people visiting your website is one factor. The opt-in rate is another. You can get many more visitors converting into subscribers just by altering your opt-in offer.

Double Your Profits Without Increasing Your Sales

Recent studies analyzing the tax returns of over 1 million businesses have shown that the majority of companies in this country make a pretax profit, as a percentage of sales, of 5% or less. I am not just referring to small companies.

If your company made a pretax profit last year of 5% or less, you can at least double, and most likely much more than double, your pretax profits simply by reducing costs 5% while merely holding sales level.

If you currently enjoy a profit ratio, as a percentage of sales, that exceeds 5%, congratulations! You are in the minority. You are exceeding the average and excelling where others are not. But you can do better. Much better. In fact, unless your profit ratio is extremely high, the concepts I will show you here should prove to be nearly as effective for your company as they are for those companies making a profit ratio of 5% or less.

The way to double your profits is to reduce your costs by an amount equal to your pretax profits as a % of sales while doing nothing more than holding sales level!

If your profit ratio, as a percentage of sales, is less than 5%, you can use it to replace the 5% example I am using with your % and read as though I am talking to you directly. Of course, this will also work with 1%, 2%, 3%, or 4%.

So, while I have called this the 5% solution it could just as easily have been called the 1% solution or the 4% solution or whatever percentage that is equal to your pretax profit as a percentage of sales from your last fiscal year. The concept is the same. Take your pretax profit ratio and decrease costs by this percentage, while holding sales level and you will come very close to doubling your profits.

Let me demonstrate this using a larger company as an example. If you have $100,000,000 in sales and a 5% pretax profit your costs are $95,000,000. This means 95% of the income from your sales goes to cover your costs. Your pretax profit is $5,000,000. If you can lower your costs by only 5% you will increase your profit to $9,750,000.

Your original $95,000,000 of costs times.05 (a 5% reduction) = $4,750,000. This is how much you will have added to your bottom line.Your profits have risen 95% from $5,000,000 to $9,750,000 without a single dollar increase in sales!

You have nearly doubled your profits. Let me put these numbers in perspective for you;with an average of 249 business days a year excluding holidays, this company just added $19,076 per day to the bottom line. This was accomplished simply by lowering costs by 5%! How much per day would you add to your bottom line by doubling your profits?

To realize the same increase in profits at the existing 95% cost ratio, this company would have to increase sales to nearly $200,000,000. Which would you think would be the best way to go? Could they even increase sales from $100,000,000 to $200,000,000? If so, how? At what cost?

Remember, we are talking about nearly doubling your sales to achieve the same bottom line result that can be accomplished by merely holding sales level and reducing costs by 5%. Doubling this company’s sales would be an almost impossible task to accomplish in any reasonable length of time. However, cutting their costs by an amount that will allow them to double, or even triple, their pretax profits can be done in a very short time and quite easily.

The concept is the same no matter what your sales are. For example, if your sales are $5,000,000 and you have the same 5% pretax profit ratio your pretax profits are $250,000, leaving your costs at $4,750,000. If you can lower your costs by 5% they will drop by $237,500. This was arrived at by taking 5% or.05 of your costs which were $4,750,000. Your new pretax profit level is $487,500. You have nearly doubled your profits without increasing your sales a penny.

To realize this same profit increase by increasing sales, you would have had to increase sales by $4,750,000 or, in other words, you would have nearly had to double sales. The way to determine how much of a sales increase you would need to match the added profits realized by cutting your costs is to simply take the added profit realized by your cost cutting efforts and divide it by your pretax profit ratio.

There you have it. You would need to nearly double your sales from $5,000,000 to $9,750,000 to realize the same profit increase that you can obtain by merely cutting your costs by 5%. Imagine that. You can nearly double your profits by simply cutting costs an amount equal to your pretax profit ratio. Compare the effort required to cut costs by a mere 5% to the cost and effort required to double your sales;one can be done very easily and the other can’t. It is just that simple!

It doesn’t matter if your sales are $100,000 or $100,000,000,000, it works the same way.

Double your sales or reduce costs by 5%? Think of the effort and expense that would be required to try and double your sales. Think of the risk. Think of the personnel costs. Think of the marketing costs. Think of the facility and operational changes that would be needed.

Even if you could double your sales, how many years would it take? Just think about our example of the $5 million dollar company. Think about this. Which do you think is more easily achieved, turning this company into a $10 million dollar company or cutting costs by 5%?

Reducing your costs by 5% is not very difficult, can be done in a very short time, involves no growth, and improves your cash flow. In fact, you should be easily able to decrease costs by much more than this. Trying to increase sales by 100% will take a bit more doing.The choice would appear to be a very simple one.

Of course, you can save 5% and a great deal more. There are hundreds of ways, large and small, in which you can save 5% and much more.Yes, I know that in some cases you will be unable to reduce a cost by 5% and, in fact, you will do well just by being able to control them.

But there are many places in which you can easily reduce actual dollar costs by 10%, 20%, even 50% or more.Think overall and not just individual costs. Think of the areas in which you can reduce costs by 1% or 2%, think of the areas in which you can easily reduce costs by 25%, 50% or more.

Think about what I have shown you. Plug your pretax profit percentages into these formulas and see the impact cost control and expense reduction can have on your company.

Many people in the corporate world start off with the intention to only work the standard hours yet somewhere along the way, they become completely consumed by a never-ending To Do list. So here are my four steps to reconnecting with what is important to you and designing a work schedule that works for you.

STEP 1: CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK
Breaking your thought pattern is the first step towards designing your best work schedule. There is so much social pressure to be part of the rat race, and you should analyze whether succumbing to this thought pattern is working for you. Ask yourself these questions:

Are you willing to live on the edge?
Are you willing to substitute happiness for monetary gain?
Do you want to leave behind a legacy?
Do you want to travel and work from wherever you are in the world?

Your answers will form the basis of your blueprint of your ideal work life.

STEP 2: THINK LATERALLY
You have your own unique abilities. Learn how to make them work for you. If you are an accountant and you are crushed with deadlines at the end of each quarter, then plan your life in a way that allows you to work hard during those times and keep normal work hours for the remainder of the year.

The Internet has made traditional jobs much more flexible. If you are a teacher and do not want to be tied to a classroom then consider online teaching. A computer and an Internet connection is all you need. You can design your life around your workload so that you are only working the number of hours you want. Remember, this is your life and you call the shots.

STEP 3: SCHEDULE IN WHAT REALLY COUNTS
There was a time a couple of years ago when I did not schedule a break for 15 months and ended up severely ill. So before you schedule anything else into your calendar, make sure you schedule what really counts first. This includes events that will make a positive difference in your life such as:

Time for yourself to unwind, relax and recharge.
Vacation time. Long breaks should be a minimum of two weeks twice yearly and mini breaks such as weekends away should be scheduled every two months. Studies show that people are more likely to remain happy when they schedule in frequent short holidays than infrequent longer ones.
Family time and date nights.
Time with friends. Schedule the next catch up in before the night is over so that it does not get lost in the work life.

STEP 4: START SMALL AND SLOW
Start the ball rolling slowly so you can easily notice things gaining momentum as you make your schedule work for you. For instance, you could set a goal of winning 10 clients and turning away any extras because you know you do not want to dedicate more hours to work. Dedication to your personal wellbeing and who you are as a person instead is what will guide you towards creating a schedule that works for you rather than against you.
